About me

I am a Usui Reiki Master, offering Reiki sessions in the River Falls/Hudson area.

Throughout my practice, I mainly focus on relationship and emotional issues; it is, in my personal experience, these two areas which are a main source of pain and imbalance in individual's lives.
Please understand: I am not claiming to be a medical practioner, nor any psychological professional. If you have serious medical or psychological issues, please, please, please do seek the attention of a professional. Reiki is an excellent complementary tool to modern medicine and psychological therapies; it is not a replacement to any of these practices.

What is Reiki

Reiki is a technique of energy healing technique which works to removed energy and health blockages. According to legend, it originated in the early 1900s, with Dr Usui Mikao, a Japanese man who discovered it while meditating for 21 days on a mountain.

We are made up of more than just our physical bodies; emotions, worry, and doubt affect us just as much, if not more, as physical symptoms. Have you ever heard of someone worrying themselves sick? Have you been under so much stress that you experienced a medical problem? Have you ever been in a room with people who are arguing, or who have just finished arguing, and felt the uncomfortable tension in the room?

In fact, physical symptoms of illness often times have an emotional or energetic root. If you've ever entered a room where people have been heatedly arguing and felt the heavy tension lingering in the room, shared space with an overly negative or pessimistic person and felt exhausted, or suffered an illness due to stress or worry, then you have experienced this. Reiki itself operates on the idea that we are all beautiful, wondrous human beings, with the capacity to grow and heal naturally. We all have the same life force (also called ki) flowing through our energy centers (chakras), and Reiki works to free up that energy.
We are all born with amazing sets of abilities but, over time, we forget how to use these. Additionally, we are exposed to a wide array of emotions, feelings, and fears that cause blockages in our energy; experiencing worry, self-doubt, feeling "drained" or "dead", anger, jealousy, et al, creates imbalances in our energetic system. As a result, many of us are plagued with ulcers, depression, a sense of purposelessness, and physical viruses.
Reiki works to cleanse and break up these blockages in our energy, allowing them to come to the surface, where we can deal with them, heal them, and, most importantly, let them go.

Reiki as a complementary therapy

Like many individuals, I have long since passed the point where I place total faith in the modern medical system. After experiencing several painful medical conditions that the modern medical model wasn't able to resolve, I made the decision to look into alternative - and, ultimately, more effective - methods of healing, and I'm hardly the first person to do so.

In his book, Spontaneous Healing (which I highly reccommend checking out!), Dr. Andrew Weil addresses the beginning of our medical dilemma:

"In ancient Greece, doctors worked under the patronage of Asklepios, the god of medicine, but healers served Asklepios's daughter, the radiant Hygiea, goddess of health .... For the worshiper of Hygeia, health is the natural order of things, a positive attribute to which men are entitled if they govern their lives wisely. According to them, the most important function of medicine is to discover and teach the natural laws which will ensure a man a healthy mind in a healthy body. More skeptical, or wiser in the ways of the world, the followers of Asklepios believe that the chief role to the physician is to treat disease, to restore health by correcting any imperfections caused by accidents of birth or life."

In my personal (and completely unresearched) opinion, the followers of Hygeia today would be practitioners of osteopathic health - Osteopathic doctors, massage therapists, and many of the alternative practitioners who treat the whole person. This is a stark contrast to the modern medical model, which tends to treat the symptoms of an illness that an individual is experiencing, rather than the source.
